What is it?

Finite Group is a collective of cool maths people who want to have nice conversations about mathematical ideas.

We host monthly video chats in which we discuss mathematical topics, in an informal conversation style. We won't assume a level of maths knowledge beyond about high school/college level, and if anything is under-explained there’ll be the opportunity to ask questions.

The monthly livestreams will take place in a channel within Discord accessible to paying community members, and we will attempt to record the stream so people who miss it live can watch back for a few months afterwards.

All members also get free access to Discord, where we have a friendly mathematical community with people chatting and sharing mathematical content, including puzzles, jokes and memes, links to maths papers, written content or videos, or anything else they think people may find interesting. We hope this will be a place to build a community and make friends, as well as plan and remind people about our monthly streams.

 

Who are you?

The Finite Group is generated by Katie Steckles, Peter Rowlett, Ayliean MacDonald and Matthew Scroggs. The generators are all experienced maths communicators, with backgrounds in teaching, maths communication and online engagement.

The membership fees from subscribers are used to pay the four generators, and any guests we invite to join us, for the time they spend preparing and delivering the livestreams. The money also supports the free content we put out elsewhere online, and allows us to put together special freebies and bonus content for our paid members.
